Growth (Solo Euphonium and synthesizer)

Program Note

Carter Bivens approached me about writing a piece of lyrical music for him which I don't do very often. The music you hear is my experiment in not just the electronic side of music composition but in writing music that reflects an aspect of life. Carter has grown so much as a person over the time I have known him. A deeply introspective and thoughtful person, Carter hoped that this music might be able to reflect the changes and the struggles he has gone through. This music depicts aspects of this journey through the course of the piece, from unsure, to confident and self-assured. The music centers around "C," the first letter of Carter's name but ends on an "E" depicting Carter's growth and the upward trajectory he has found himself on in his life.
