Program Note

Surge was composed with the intention of immersing a deaf audience in the power of music through vibration, emphasizing the low frequencies that often go unnoticed. The piece builds gradually, with deep, resonant tones that swell like a wave, growing in intensity until they burst in a full, overwhelming surge. The focus is not on melody or traditional harmonic structures, but on the physical experience of sound, allowing listeners to feel the music in their bodies. Through this unique approach, Surge becomes a visceral journey, inviting all to connect with the pulse and force of music beyond the realm of hearing.

Note to performers

In order to help the audience feel the vibrations of the music, audience members may be provided with a 75% inflated balloon. Performers should be as close to the audience as possible and can optionally be spread wide in an arc to emphasize the antiphonal effects of the music.
